Generative AI Policy

For over fifty years, DANCE 89.5 has been a champion of electronic dance music, celebrating the past, present and future of the genre in all of its forms while also supporting all artists, from DJs and producers based in the Pacific Northwest to global headliners. All have a space on our airwaves. As an organization, DANCE 89.5 strives to be a global leader in electronic dance music that entertains, educates, connects and inspires.

With that sense of stewardship in mind, DANCE 89.5 is taking an important step forward in articulating our policy on generative AI so that we can be thoughtful in the music that we share with our students, listeners and donors. Our goal in defining this policy is to ensure that all of our stakeholders can have confidence that the music they hear on DANCE 89.5 was created by humans.

Our guidelines for generative AI in music are as follows:

DANCE 89.5 will not knowingly broadcast or play music that is generated either wholly or substantially by AI, nor will we play music that features synthetic vocalists or generative AI tools used to impersonate artists or styles.

Additionally, DANCE 89.5 will not knowingly post, repost or link to any images, event flyers, logos or visual content (including video) that is either wholly or substantially generated by AI, to our official website or associated social media/web accounts.

DANCE 89.5 understands that new technology is inherently part of electronic dance music but we do not believe that technology should replace the creativity that is a crucial part of the human experience, on and off the dancefloor. With this policy it is our goal to support human creativity first and foremost as we act as a leader in electronic dance music, here at home in Seattle and beyond. We will be sure to communicate any updates to this policy as the rapidly changing generative AI space develops.

Please reach out to DANCE 89.5’s Program Director, Harmony Soleil, with any thoughts, questions or concerns.

Thank you and keep dancing!
